Shopping for gluten free food in Mallorca
Buing food is not as hard as it seems. We are lucky as there are now many shops and supermarkets that sell celiac friendly food and it is ever increasing. However knowing where they are is the problem. If you are staying in Palma then life will be easy. Palma has everything from supermarkets to Health food shops. If you are staying in Palma Nova, Magaluf, Alcudia etc don't worry there is plenty of choice from supermarkets to pharmacys. Below is a list of all the supermarkets and shops that I know of that sell gluten free food. For a more detailed review then click on the shop to see a list of the foods available.
Mercadona Supermarkets
Mercadona has alot of ordinary food such as crisps, peaunts, sauces, meats etc that are clearly labeled as gluten free. You really can't go wrong when buying anything from Mercadona. They also have some gluten free cereals from the ds - dietry specials company, breakfast pops and cornflakes. The cornflakes are actually really nice. They also have some rice pastas which are very nice from the Gallo range. They also have a few other stuff including chocolate chip cookies, which to be honest I would not go mad on and some bread, fairy cakes and croissants from the Proceli brand. The croissants and bread are really nice but beware that it is precooked so you need an oven. Please note that Mercadona dose not have a gluten free section as such. Most of the products are mixed in with ordinary products so you just have to look for them.
Eroski Supermarkets
Eroski is a supermarket which I don't usually shop in, however they do have some gluten free products. Not all Eroskis will have these products so it might be worth asking the cashier if they have them and where you can find them. The brand they do is called Pasticely and they have various cakes and eclairs which should be found in thier cake section. However Eroski do have a fantastic list of products that are their own brand and are ordinary food that is gluten free. If you are shopping in Eroksi then print out the lists and take it with you. Alcampo Supermarket
There is only one Alcampo in Mallorca (Autopista Palma-Inca, salida 4. 07141-Marratxí). However if you have a car it is worth visiting as it's a big hypermarket. Alcampo has a small section for gluten free food located in the dietry section. They have cereals, flour, pastas, pizza bases, biscuits, cakes, sweets and breads. The brand for most of their products is Epsilon, No glut and Schaer. Sojasun yougurts are great for those of you who can't have loctose. They are loctose free and gluten free and taste really nice. There are quite a few different flavours to choose from. Just doubel check the labels. It is clearly written 'sin gluten'. View the Alcampo gluten free list.
Just outside Alcampo next to the sports shop you will find a health food shop which has a few more different gluten free products. Especially nice are the cakes from Bi aglut and the sesame seed bars.
Carrefour Supermarkets
Carrefour is a big hypermarket and have just started to do their own brand of gluten free food. They have breads, cakes, baguettes, pizza bases and croissants. These are all located in the dietry section.

Just outside Carrefour there is a health food shop which is very small but has a wide range of gluten free products including some from the Schaer range.
Health Food Shops
There are quite a few health food shops in Mallorca and they all stock some gluten free food.Se Da is by far one of my favourites. It is located in Palma in plaza Santa Pagesa 3. They have a wide range of products with most of them from the Schaer range. Products include, bread mixes, breads, cakes, pretzels (one of my favouite cause they taste just like the real thing), biscuits, pastas, yeast, flour, cereals, cereal bars, pizza bases, bread sticks, crackers etc. Some of the beads you can buy and eat there and then and some you have to pre cook but they do have a wide selection.
Pharmacys
Under a new law passed in 2008 all pharmacys must stock some gluten free products. To be honest they dont seem to have alot of stock and mainly have only Schaer pastas and cakes. It is worth checking it out though and even asking the pharmasist if they can get more products for you. There are plenty of pharmacys all over Mallorca.
